City Centre Bible Study Wednesday January 22nd @ 6874 Steward Road, Delta Mark 5: 21-43 7:30 pm
• The early church connected an image to each gospel (Matthew- a Lion; Luke a Human face, John an eagle and Mark an ox). Each image tried to remind and capture a unique trait of each gospel (more on that in another study). Marks was the ox because it is an animal associated with the ability to work very hard and ceaselessly. It was said that in the gospel of Mark Jesus is portrayed as the on that works hard and ceaselessly on our salvation. Do you see that trait in this particular story? How?
• What do you make of Jairus falling at Jesus feet? What does that convey about his inner condition? What does it mean to fall at somebody’s feet? When have you felt like doing that?
• It is said in verse 24 that a large crowd followed. What might have been their motives? How did it differ from Jairus’s?
• What do you think was the worst about this woman’s (v 25-26) condition? How did her burden exclude her?
• What made Jesus’s reaction to this woman bizarre? What made it rational?
• In verse 33 this woman also falls at his feet but does something else? What suggested practises might be hidden in what she does here?
• The crowd goes from wailing v 39 to laughing in verse 40 very quickly. What does that tell you about them and the “wisdom of crowds” in general?
• The woman was sick for 12 years and the girl was 12 years old. Is that coincidence or does it carry meaning?
Both the man and the woman reached out in Faith with extraordinary results? What kind of spaces helps people/you to reach out to God? How could our church and/or Bible study group create more such spaces?
