Prayer
Since last week, has God answered any of our prayers? Let us know! Or, share something great that's happened in the last week. Then, let’s focus on our present prayer requests: What's on your mind or heart that we can pray for concerning you or someone you love?
Praise
It Is Well
When peace like a river, attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul
It is well
With my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come
Let this blest assurance control
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate
And hath shed His own blood for my soul
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul!
Passage - Philippians 4:10-23
10 I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me but had no opportunity to show it. 11 Not that I am referring to being in need, for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me. 14 In any case, it was kind of you to share my distress.
15 You Philippians indeed know that in the early days of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving except you alone. 16 For even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me help for my needs more than once. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the profit that accumulates to your account. 18 I have been paid in full and have more than enough; I am fully satisfied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. 19 And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers and sisters who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, especially those of the emperor’s household.
23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
Ponder
1. What warms your heart from the song or passage above—and why?
2. Paul says in verses eleven and twelve that he has learned to be content whatever the circumstances/whatever he has. As a matter of fact, he even goes on to say in verse twelve that he has found the ‘secret’ to being content. What’s his secret?
3. If you were meeting for coffee with someone who was outside of the church, how would you describe what contentment is to you—and/or how would you describe to them how that secret contentment can be practical for you—or them?
4. In verse 13, Paul states that he can do all things through Christ who gives him strength. But in context, this is not about just achieving anything we want (like being a UFC Heavyweight Champion). It’s about endurance. It’s about thriving in any situation we find ourselves in. But if that’s true, how does that change how we view this passage for our own lives?
5. Paul closes his letter here with personal greetings to others (and other churches!). How can we here at City Centre Church continue to encourage other churches around us as we all partner in the Gospel together: not just with each other, but with other churches in our area—or far away?
6. The ministry of giving to other churches giving to others is shown beautifully here in the last part of this letter. Do you know where your tithes and offerings go with the PCC around the world? Also what do you think giving beyond just money to others can look like here at CCC in the coming weeks? (Hint: Think the upcoming Long Weekend!)
