Prayer

As always, we start with prayer. Is there anyone you know who you think needs prayer--including you? (Also, if you have any answered prayers, please share them!)

Praise

The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty

Let all the Earth rejoice

All the Earth rejoice

He wraps himself in light

And darkness tries to hide

And trembles at His voice

Trembles at His voice

How great is our God, sing with me

How great is our God, and all will see

How great, how great is our God

Age to age He stands

And time is in His hands

Beginning and the end

Beginning and the end

The Godhead Three in One

Father Spirit Son

The Lion and the Lamb

The Lion and the Lamb

Name above all names

Worthy of our praise

My heart will sing

How great is our God

Passage

The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, to whom the word of the Lord came in the days of King Josiah son of Amon of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. It came also in the days of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah until the end of the eleventh year of King Zedekiah son of Josiah of Judah, until the captivity of Jerusalem in the fifth month.

Now the word of the Lord came to me saying,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.” But the Lord said to me,

“Do not say, ‘I am only a boy, ’for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you.Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you,            says the Lord.”

Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me,

“Now I have put my words in your mouth.10 See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”

Ponder

1.  Is there anything from the previous song lyrics or passage that moves you? What is it?

2. Jeremiah weeps with the heart of God over the wrong decisions of the nation (Jer 8-9).  But when was the last time you cried over someone else’s wrong decision? Discreetly, reflect on a time years ago when you felt holy compassion for someone making a harmful choice. How did it affect your relationship with them or your actions?

3.   In Jeremiah 1:5, God says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you… I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” How does this verse show God’s purpose for Jeremiah, and what does it suggest about God’s plan for each of us?

4.  Jeremiah hesitates when he hears from God, saying he is too young and doesn’t know how to speak (Jeremiah 1:6). How does God respond to his fears (Jeremiah 1:8), and what can we learn from this about addressing our own insecurities when God calls us?

5.  In Jeremiah 1:10, God gives Jeremiah the power to “tear down” and “build up.” What does this mean in the context of his prophetic role, and how might God empower us to address wrongs and promote righteousness in our communities?

6.   Jeremiah’s weeping connects very strongly to Jesus weeping over Jerusalem (Luke 19). How do their responses to people’s wrong decisions compare, and what does Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice reveal about the depth of God’s compassion?
