Prayer
As always, we start with prayer. Is there anything we as a group can pray for concerning you or someone close to you? Also, are there any praise reports from the last week?
Praise
You Never Let Go
Even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Your perfect love is casting out fear
And even when we're caught in the middle of the storms of this life
We won't turn back
We know You are near
And we will fear no evil
For our God is with us
And if our God is with us
Whom then shall we fear?
Whom then shall we fear?
Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of us
And we can see the light that is coming for the heart that holds on
A glorious light beyond all compare
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
We'll live to know You here on the earth
Passage
Psalm 61
Assurance of God’s Protection
To the leader: with stringed instruments. Of David.
1 Hear my cry, O God;
listen to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I call to you,
when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I,
3 for you are my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.
4 Let me abide in your tent forever,
find refuge under the shelter of your wings. Selah
5 For you, O God, have heard my vows;
you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
6 Prolong the life of the king;
may his years endure to all generations!
7 May he be enthroned forever before God;
appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him!
8 So I will always sing praises to your name,
as I pay my vows day after day.
Ponder
1 What part of this psalm/song really stands out to you and warms your heart? Why do you think it has that effect on you?
2 In verses one and two, David is crying “from the ends of the earth”, a remote place far away—to a rock that is higher than himself. When you read that, do the 'ends of the earth' connect with you as a physical place, a spiritual place, or both? When was a time that you thought you were entirely out of your element and you cried out for God to answer you and lead you—and how did you seek refuge?
3 It seems David keeps getting to a higher and higher place in this psalm. He starts off crying from a distant/low place ‘from the ends of the earth’; then he is led to a rock higher than himself; then he ends up then in the protection of a strong (pile of rocks) tower; and then ends up under the wings of shelter that can have him soar infinitly higher. What does this kind of progressive deliverance like this look like to you these days? How has God continued to lift your perspective higher as time has gone by?
4 What are the other rocks we can lead ourselves to when we’re in a hard place? But also, what makes the mentioned rock here in this psalm better?
5 David is given a high advantage by the Lord, and a higher place for perspective, but also safety under God’s wings—showing a very intimate moment of what almost looks to be parental love. How does this image inform you of what God’s protection can look like?
6 Look at the difference between verse one and verse eight. The Psalm starts with a plea, but it ends with continual praise. When God delivers you, what does your continual praise look like as you “daily pay your vows" with those around you?
