The Friendship of David and Jonathan
- What do you look for or appreciate in a friend? How did your outlook and expectations about friendship changed as you moved through different stages of Life?
- When have you felt most lonely in your life or during the past week? What is the difference between solitude and isolation?
- Why do you think men are generally much more lonely that women?
- What does the questions David ask Jonathan in verse 1 tell you about the kind of friend he was?
- The start of Jonathan’s and David’s friendship are described in 1 Samuel 18: 3-4. Read it. What does it mean to make a covenant with somebody. How would the covenant David made with Jonathan look today?
- What is the difference between neediness and interdependence in friendships?
- How does David and Jonathan’s relationship contrast that of Saul and David?
- How important is quantity of time and energy spent in friendships and relationships? How often do we need to see our friends?
- How did that what Saul said to Johnathan in verses 30-34 test his friendship? Do we in religion and friendships, sometimes shame people into loyalty?
- Soul seemed to be a constant factor in the friendship between David and Jonathan and in a unexpected way beneficial to their friendship and love for each other. Why do you think that is? What responsibility do you as a friend have to either protect your friend from or facilitate reconciliation between your friend and other people?
- Looking at verse 42, how could “letting someone go” be a sign of true friendship? When does friendship require of us to let our friends go?
- In John 15: 15 Jesus calls his disciples friends? How is being a friend of Jesus the same and different being the friend of another person?
