Why does good things happen to bad people? (yes, you read that right)
- The Bible is a book that is seen as an
authoritative and trustworthy source of God’s attributes and actions, at least
of those He chose to reveal to us who He loves. Read the following passages
that all relates to God being sovereign and put in your own words what you
understand under the term:
- Isaiah 43: 10-13
- Psalm 115: 3
- Psalm 135: 6
- Isaiah 14: 27
- Isaish 46: 9-10
- Is God inside or outside time? Why is it important to keep in mind?
- God’s decrees could be seen as the execution of
God’s sovereignty. What does it mean to say God decrees things?
- Isaiah 41: 21-2
God wills things in two kinds of ways. There are the good things that are directly His will. He delights and rejoices in them. They are often though not always recognized as such by people of faith. Then there are the things that God wills by allowing it to happen even if it saddens Him and is not according to His will. They are also recognized widely but could also be mistaken for good things because of us as humankind’s sinful nature. Both of these “wills” are made to serve his purposes. Joseph’s statement in Genesis 50: 19-20 serves as a good example of that.
Do you agree with this explanation of God’s will? Why or why not?
- What do you understand under God’s providence? Where have you experienced it in your own life? Where have you felt led down? Of what things you were devastated by, do you today say: It was for the better?
- What problem does it create when we tell people your daughter/dad/ spouse died because the devil stole his life?
- What comfort can it bring a person to know that God foreknew and in that sense decreed an inexplicable and seemingly senseless event or suffering?
- Was the death of Jesus on the cross God’s will or the devil taking over? Was it good or bad that Jesus died on the cross?
